Sarah came to Ukrai­ne as an acti­vist and wri­ter with an inte­rest in refu­gee issues and the huma­ni­ta­ri­an cri­sis. She sett­led in Nor­t­hern Sal­tiv­ka in Kharkiv and went from being a repor­ter and repre­sen­ta­ti­ve of the mayor of Zolochiv to ser­ving as a medic in the Noman Çele­bici­han Battalion.

Sarah was appoin­ted the offi­ci­al spo­kesper­son for the Ter­ri­to­ri­al Defence Forces in August this year for com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ons with the Wes­tern audi­ence. This gene­ra­ted even more inte­rest in her in the Rus­si­an Federation.

Her mili­ta­ry code name was Blon­de, but she had to stop using it becau­se the Rus­si­ans have put a pri­ce on her head. “If they inter­cept our radio com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ons, hear my name and pick up the posi­ti­on whe­re I am, they will come after me,” says Sarah Ash­ton-Ciril­lo, a Flo­ri­da-born ser­geant in the Ukrai­ni­an Army.

A trans­gen­der jour­na­list from the United Sta­tes is now an offi­ci­al spo­kesper­son of the Ter­ri­to­ri­al Defen­se Forces of the Ukrai­ni­an Armed Forces.
The Kyiv Post on Thurs­day tweeted that Sarah Ash­ton-Ciril­lo “has beco­me one of the spea­k­ers for the Defen­se Forces,” and her work for Ukrai­ne was soon prai­sed in state­ments from Ukraine’s Minis­try of Defen­se and Han­na Mailar, a Ukrai­ni­an depu­ty minis­ter of defense.
